Happy International Women’s Day 2024!

From the International Women’s Day site:

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all .

Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to drive gender parity.
IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere. Inclusion means all IWD action is valid.

There’s still time!

Photo from the WEIRD TORONTO Facebook group.

Happy Valentine’s Day, gentlemen. This is a reminder that it’s not too late!

As a longtime former resident of Toronto and former Microsoft developer evangelist, I often made use of Microsoft’s downtown office in the EY Tower. Hence I can say with great confidence that I recognize the place where this photo was taken without having to analyze its EXIF data (which was removed as part of the Facebook upload process anyway).

The “Earn More Points” sign clearly marks the photo as having been taken at a Shoppers Drug Mart. The near-identical blue suits are a good sign that it’s a Shoppers Drug Mart on or near Bay and King Streets, the financial heart of the city. And finally, I’ve been in this particular drug store more than a couple of times; it’s the one in Brookfield Place (formerly BCE Place).

Concern about crime: up. Actual crime: down.

Graphic: “A reminder, because it’ll be a U.S. election year, and certain parties campaign only with fear and loathing...” Features three headlines showing dropping crime rates.

2024 will be an election year in the U.S., and it’s probably be a nasty one. One particular candidate — who faces a boatload of indictments, pretty much committed an act of treason (and possibly more than just that well-publicized one) — still has plenty of followers who see him as either a means to entrench their lofty position in society, or as an avatar into which they can channel their resentment.

That candidate has already campaigned on the fear of rising crime, with crime often being a code word for “the coloreds.” The Southern Strategy still lives.

But actual crime, it turns out, has been dropping:

Infographic: “U.S. Homicides Fall in 2023,” showing drops in homicides in New York (down 11%), Los Angeles (down 16%), Chicago (down 13%), Houston (down 11%), Phoenix (down 15%), Philadelphia (down 21%), and San Antonio (down 12%). Homicides in Dallas were up 14%, and Austin showed no change.

The problem is that it’s all too easy to sell the idea of rising crime. The general perception, according to a recent Gallup poll, is that crime is up, in spite of the actual numbers. And for those who keep carping about “the illegals” contributing to the not-rising-but-rising crime, the numbers say that they’re may be less of a problem than other groups.

The “Family Guy” “OKAY/NOT OKAY” meme, where Peter Griffin, in stereotypical “Middle Eastern garb” is having his skin color compared against an “OKAY/NOT OKAY” color chart.

Expect a nastier news cycle in the new year.

Jimmy Buffett’s career wasn’t THAT long…

50 decades? That’s 500 years.
Tap to view at full size.

I think whoever was assembling the “lower third” for CNN’s news segment on the late great Jimmy Buffett (RIP, you magnificent bastard and musical role model of mine) was trying to choose between saying that he’d played for over 50 years or 5 decades, settled on “50 years”, and forgot to change the final word.

Consider this another reminder to use processes and tools to double-check your work before you put it out into the world, especially if it’s a rush job.
