What I Did This Weekend, The Short Version

Smith and Wollensky in Boston.

The Ginger Ninja and I spent the weekend in Boston for a very happy reason — her brother (and my “brother from another mother”) Andy Ramoniac is getting married to his girlfriend Sue, and it was the meet-the-inlaws weekend. We flew to Beantown late Friday afternoon and high-tailed it from Logan to Smith and Wollensky’s downtown, where we were to have a meet-and-greet dinner with Andy and Sue, Wendy’s parents and Sue’s parents.

While waiting outside the restaurant, a cab pulled up to the front door and a couple emerged. I was about to inquire if they were Sue’s parents when Sue’s mom said “You must be Joey. I recognize you from your blog.”

I love living in the future very much.

It’s a busy day, so I’ll have to tell more about the weekend later. Let me just say that Sue’s parents are great people, but as I say, great kids come from great parents. Lovely meeting you this weekend!

Gung Haggis Fat Choy!

Guy wearing dragon mask and kilt.

Here’s one of those “Only in Canada” cultural events that I can sink my teeth into: Gung Haggis Fat Choy!, a cross-cultural event that takes advantage of the proximity of Chinese New Year and Robbie Burns’ Day. It’s an event organized by one “Toddish McWong” that takes place at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and pays homage to SFU’s Scots roots and sizable Chinese student population.

(A tip o’ the hat to my co-worker Elizabeth for pointing me to the site!)

Another Remix of "The Shining" [Fixed]

Last month, I showed you this image, which mashed up Sesame Street and The Shining:

'Axe through the door' scene from 'The Shining', but with Cookie Monster.

And now, I present to you a different kiddie icon coming through the door. Click on the photo to see who it is!

Shopping Cart Circle

I’d like to try this sometime, but I doubt the folks at my local grocery store are going to let me:

Your Alpha Nerd Moment of Zen

From a Hooters news release:

Warren Buffet and Bill gates pose with a gaggle of Hooters girls.

(Atlanta, GA) While they surely don’t need the help, the world’s two richest men can now eat for free at Hooters restaurants. On Friday October 20, 2006 Bill Gates and Warren Buffet were presented with Hooters VIP Cards at a Hooters Restaurant in Kansas City, Kansas. The Cards entitle the gentlemen, who currently rank numbers 1 and 2 on the list of worlds richest, to free food at any of the chains 435 locations in 46 states and 20 countries exclusive of tip and alcohol.

The pair made a stop at the Hooters Restaurant along with members of the Board of Directors for Berkshire Hathaway. The visit came at the request of Buffet so the group could pose for a Christmas Card photo with the chain’s beautiful Hooters girls. “It was an honor to have these powerful individuals dine in my store” said Jason Fetters General manager of the Hooters located at 1712 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas. “Clearly these guys can go anywhere they want to. The fact that they picked Hooters hopefully says something about the strength of our brand.”

I guess we can assume that from now on, all of Bill Gates’ and Warren Buffet’s reviews of Hooters on their blogs will have the taint (hah!) of bias.

Underwear Goes INSIDE the Pants

One of the top items on Reddit today is a link to a “Best of Craigslist” posting titled Underwear Goes Inside the Pants, a funny rant about some of the problems in modern American society (it’s applicable to us here in Canada too).

This part always cracks me up:

I walked behind this guy the other day. A homeless guy asked him for money.

He looks right at the homeless guy and says “Why don’t you go get a job, you bum?”

People always say that to homeless guys like it is so easy.

This homeless guy was wearing his underwear outside his pants. Outside his pants.

I’m guessing his resume isn’t all up to date. I’m predicting some problems during the interview process.

The person who posted Underwear Goes Inside the Pants to Craigslist didn’t write it. It’s a stand-up comic routine by Greg Giraldo; it was then set to music by “Lazy B” (formerly “Lazyboy”, but a certain manufacturer of reclining chairs took issue with the name), a project started by a former member of Aqua (yes, the Aqua behind that annoying bubble-gum number, Barbie Girl). If you’ve never heard the rant or tune before, here’s the music video. Enjoy!
