It Was Always in MY All-Time Top Five!

Photo: Album cover for AC/DC's 'Back in Black'.

I was 13 years old when AC/DC’s best-known and best-loved album, Back in Black, came out. When I was a DJ at Crazy Go Nuts University’s Clark Hall Pub, its biggest single, the rock anthem You Shook Me All Night Long was

a surefire way to pack the dance floor — even the most hard-core

alt-rock music snobs would do a jig and “throw the horns”. I was 31

when I first performed You Shook Me on accordion. I will not reveal the ages I was when I got to live out those lyrics. Even today, a good 25 years after the album’s release and probably thousands of plays, Back in Black still is on high rotation on my iTunes.

It makes me quite happy to know that Back in Black has, according to this CNN story, made it into the top 5 biggest-selling albums of all time. Congrats, Angus and boys!

Will Apple Go With Intel? (Hint: Yes)

I

posted this to The Farm, but I thought it bore

repeating here…

Graphic: Apple and 'Intel Inside' logos.

That’s the

question

on

the

tech

industry’s

collective

mind

at

the

moment.

My counterpart at Microsoft, Robert Scoble, writes:

…the

entire industry is shaking because of Steve Jobs’ decision. It’s

impossible to know all the details until the shaking subsides a bit.

It will be one of the most interesting weeks in technology

since I started blogging, that’s for sure.

Although the keynote isn’t being webcast,

the

tech blog Engadget

has been keeping everyone apprised of Steve Jobs’ announcements at

WWDC

2005 by live-blogging the event, and it’s official: Apple is

switching to Intel chips!

The way he’s been doing it is quite dramatic — the keynote

slides,

which were presented on Mac OS X using Apple’s Keynote app was running

on a P4 3.6GHz!

Some quick notes, based on the available info thus

far:

  • Two years ago, Jobs promised a

    3.0GHz

PowerMac, and hasn’t been able to deliver since the PowerPC still

    hasn’t hit those speeds.

  • The

Intel architecture also offers more processing power for less

electrical power: 70 integer performance units/watt versus PowerPC’s

    15.

  • A personal obersavtion: You may want to keep

    an eye on this page,

which shows PowerPC G5 configurations outperforming Intel

configurations. I expect that it will disappear from Apple’s

    site shortly.

  • The

rumours about the “Just in Case” scenario — the ones that mentioned

that a team within Apple has been making sure that OS X compiles on

Intel — are true! According to Jobs, for the past 5 years,”Mac OS X

    has been

    living a secret double life.”

  • The lowdown for

    Mac developers:

    • Widgets, scripts and

Java should just work from the get-go.

    • Cocoa/Xcode apps should need “just a small tweak” and a

      recompile.

    • Carbon/Xcode apps will need “a few

weeks of tweaking” and a recompile.

    • Carbon/Metrowerks apps should be moved to XCode.
  • A new technology,

Rosetta, will run existing PowerPC apps on

    Intel.

This may be all the

tech

publications and sites talk about for the next little while…

This Weekend

Apartment Hunting

I love a challenge, and luckily for me, I have one this weekend. The

timing of both my housemates moving out plus the fact that my fiancee

lives in Boston and has a job that keeps her very busy (along with

wedding planning) means that we need to land an apartment this weekend.

We’ll spending this Saturday and Sunday viewing a number of apartments

in the High Park and Roncesvalles

neighbourhoods, and I will have my chequebook at the ready. If you’re a

landlord in our search area or know of a two-bed two-bath unit (house

or condo) that’s going to be available July 1st, let me know in the

comments!

One: A Night of Art and Music

Photo: Poster for 'One: A Night of Art and Music'.

My friend Dorian Logan wrote to me about One: A Night of Art and Music,

which takes place at the Gladstone Hotel on Thursday, June 16th. Here’s

what he said:

A dear friend of mine is putting

together a party. The party will have visual art, music and

happiness!

I have invited you because in my mind you would ‘dig’ this sorta thing.

It’s going to be an energetic night. Here’s the scoop…

Visual art:  tattoo artists, paintings, collage work, and some

furniture designs by our friend Jerry Rabba.

And the music…damn!!!

It’s common knowledge that I love my friend Chad Paulsons’ Afro-beat

Orchestra, Ultra Magnus, but Joe Butler (organizer of this event)

really

turned me on to another guy performing that night. His name is Joel

Parisien, and the dude has soul! Kinda like Sublime meets Stevie

Wonder…it’s very cool!

The other bands are Fireside Band (whom I must admit I know little

about, though Joe said wonderful things) and Sugarkill, who I saw

perform once only, at the Bovine about a year ago. I thought, I

honestly thought:

“in 5 years, I’ll be bragging to someone that I was at this show.” They

have a rawness to them that is so

crunchy, but

the music just makes ya boogie. I love it.

So, having said all that, please come out to a fun gig, bring positive

energy, and tell some friends!

Once again,

the event is:

One

A night of art and music

Thursday, June 16, 2005

Hotel

$7 advance, $10 at the door

Advance tickets are available at Second Spin CDs (386

Update on the Tucows Service Outages

I’m posting this here (as well as the forums on Tucows Discuss) since I know that some of our customers read this blog from time to time.

Here’s what I know — a more official notice should be coming your way shortly.

The actual applications, for the most part, continued to work.

Folks

with Blogware accounts could post to their blogs, Email Defense

continued scanning for spam and viruses, Certs kept working, Email was

queued for a little while and began processing again in the early

evening, and no mail was lost.

What stopped working during the outage: Provisioning and Management.

The

specifics are a little different for each service, but in general, it

was the ability to sell new instances of services or manage existing

ones. Blogware, being located in a different facility, was unaffected.

It’s very unusual for a redundant power system to fail like this.

The

“redundant” in “redundant power system” makes this sort of thing very

unlikely. For example, if you have two systems with a 1% probability of

failing, the probability that both will fail is one one-hundredth of 1%.

The

cause for the failure is as of yet unknown. We’re working with IBM to

identify it. Once we know, we will take steps to prevent this from

happening again and let you know what we will be doing in the future.

This Saturday: Librarian / Blogger Cream Corn Wrestling (or: Librarian / Blogger Get-Together in Toronto)

Along with Wendy, who’ll be house-hunting with me, j will be up here in Accordion City

from Boston. j’s here to attend a librarian conference, and the

librarians are looking for something to do on Saturday night. How ’bout

we Greater Toronto Area Bloggers (and general folks in the area) show them a good time, get together for some good drinks, good conversation and cream corn wrestling?
