Well Put, McFly.

Michael J. FoxThe current issue of Esquire features a cool “What I’ve Learned” interview with Alex P. Keaton/Marty McFly himself, Michael J. Fox.

A couple of excerpts:

  • People said, “Does it bother you that girls want to sleep with you because you’re famous?” “That’s a tough one. Lemme think about that. No.
  • My happiness grows in direct proportion to my acceptance, and in inverse proportion to my expectations.
  • The thing with Limbaugh was so interesting. I didn’t even have to say anything. People said to me, “Don’t ya hate the guy?” I was like, “I can’t get it up to hate the guy.” I know it’s a racket, I know it’s a job — it’s show business, and that’s fine. Let’s take it as show business.
  • If you don’t have someone calling you on your shit, you’re lost.

Our “Space” Shoot

Last week, my friend Mark Askwith, a producer at Space — the Canadian sci-fi channel — dropped me a line asking if I’d like to talk about a couple of cool gadgets in a segment for HypaSpace, Space’s “geek news” program. It sounded like a fun idea, so I said I’d do it.

Mark and Space camera guy Darcy came over to the TSOT offices last Wednesday to do the shoot, which some of my co-workers starred in. The segment will air during the year-end installment of HypaSpace; I’ll post the broadcast date as soon as I found out when it is.

I took some photos during the shoot — they appear below.

“Music is where I’d like you to touch…” My co-worker Alex demos his iPod Touch as Darcy films.

The Lost Whisper at the End of “Lost in Translation”

I was always under the impression that whatever Bill Murray whispered into Scarlett Johansson’s ear at the end of Lost in Translation was not actual dialogue, but something for the view to fill in with his or her own imagination.

Vid22.com, the creators of the video below, don’t believe that to be true. Using digital sound processing, they enhanced the whisper so that you can make out the words. If you’re curious as to what those words are, watch the video below. If you’d rather go with your imagination, don’t watch it!

A snippet from Facebook for Old People

Here’s what I posted to my tech blog, Global Nerdy in the past couple of days…

On Extended Warranties: They’re still for suckers.

Gift Idea: “RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Site with Ruby on Rails”. Looking for a gift for a programmer who’s looking to get into Ruby on Rails? (And c’mon, you all have a friend like that!) I recommend giving this book.

New York Times Article on The Parallel Processing Problem: We nerds have been talking about it for a little while, and now it’s getting mainstream coverage.

Happy 20th Birthday, Perl! Birthday greetings to the programming language known as “The Duct Tape of the Internet”. It’s still too young to drink in the U.S., but it is old enough to be tried as an adult.

Facebook for Old People: Most of the groups are about knitting and kvetching.

Many RailsConf Proposals Submitted, Included Mine: Looks like Chad and the rest of the RailsConf committee have their work cut out for them. I publish the proposal I submitted.
