Whack-a-candidate

While searching for some web-based information on contributions made to the candidates for the race to become Accordion City’s next mayor, I stumbled across a Flash-based game called Whack the Mayor. As the name suggests, it’s a “Whack-a-Mole” style of game featuring the candidates. What makes the game interesting is that there’s more than just candidate-whacking; the game is also a question-and-answer session. The candidates are all asked a question, and then you move your whacking hammer over each candidate’s head to see a satirically-played-up answer. You whack the candidate whose answer you like least, after which another question appears, and the cycle is repeated until one candidate remains.

To make things more interesting, the game keeps track of the last candidate standing for each visitor, so it’s an unofficial opinion poll of sorts. Here are the results as of 9:45 pm EST on Thursday, November 6, 2003:

Candidate % of time candidate
was last one standing
% of time candidate
was first one whacked
John Tory 35.6 15.5
David Miller 32.1 17.7
Barbara Hall 17.5 28.9
John Nunziata 8.4 16.4
Tom Jakobek 6.5 21.5

The results are pretty close to what actual polls seem to be showing, except that when last I checked, Miller had the lead, followed by Tory. The other three candidates seem to be doing as well as their whack-a-candidate counterparts.

In observance of the convention that’s being practiced by other Accordion City blogs, I’m tagging this blog entry with the Last Chance City button linking to its namesake, Rick McGinnis’ excellent blog on the mayoral election.

Public service announcement: the meaning of the word "penultimate"

My friend Wes Felter recently wrote about a computer that he’s building using premium parts. He describes it in a blog entry titled Wes’s Penultimate Linux Box.

I believe that by “penultimate”, he meant to say “archetypal”, “quintessential” or maybe even good ol’ “best”. However, that’s not what “penultimate” means. It means “second to last”.

To really mess with people’s heads, start making use of the word “antepenultimate”, which means “third to last”.

Get cooking, guys!

Gentlemen, start your ovens: I just found out via MetaFilter that today is “National Men Make Dinner” day.

There’s a set of official rules, one of which is “Man agrees not to be within 30 feet of TV remote during cooking process”. Sound thinking. I know a guy who burned Jell-O™. While the powder-and-water mixture was boiling, he took a quick look to see what was on TV and got transfixed by an Andre the Giant vs. Hulk Hogan wrestling match (this was int he eighties). he subsequently forgot about the Jell-O™, which has boiled dry and turned into a hard lump of old-style-iMac-like plastic that refused to be scraped or washed off.

Another thing to note: according to the list of “Foods that should not be part of Men Make Dinner Day”, barbecued food is not allowed. It’s about kitchen cooking. I wonder if they’ll make exceptions for the George Foreman Grill or those people fortunate to have Jenn-Air™ stoves.

My housemate Paul and I are pretty decent cooks, so most days at the house are “National Men Make Dinner Day” anyway. If you haven’t yet learned how to cook, we’d like to remind you:

  • You’re not really a grown-up until you’re capable of feeding yourself.
  • Cooking at home is a great way to eat healthier and save money.
  • Most importantly (at least for us eligible bachelors): It gets you chicks.

Get cooking!

If you use OpenSRS, I need to pick your brain!

I’m conducting some research, trying to find out what OpenSRS users want. If you’re an OpenSRS user who’s also a techincal lead, system architect, code kahuna or any other type of person who has decision-making power over technical issues, this set of questions is for you!

(And if you’re not an OpenSRS user or this stuff is too terrifically geeky for you, perhaps you might enjoy these Guy Fawkes or Matrix: Revolutions links. November 5th: more than just my birthday. Much, much more!)

It Happened to Me

Just two Catholics, agreeing to disagree…

In his Toronto mayoral election blog, Last Chance City, Rick McGinnis reports that:

THE KATHY SHAIDLE/JOEY DE VILLA GRUDGE MATCH apparently went all nuclear in the comments section of David Janes’ blog.

Nuclear? Hardly. I think of it as sprited debate between two Catholics who agree to disagree. The level of animosity is no more than two neighbours disagreeing on the issue of lawn gnomes on one of their front yards.

(On second thought, I’ve seen lawn gnome debates get really nasty. The point is that the disagreement is more along the lines of the Debating Club, not Fight Club.)

The debate is interesting, and as long as David “Ranting and Roaring” Janes doesn’t mind and if I can squeeze in the time today, I’ll add more comments. It is my intention to keep things cilvilised (although I’ll toss a witty Wilde-ish barb every now and again; after all, this is me); a blog is someone’s home on the Web, and I intend to be a good guest and am bound by the rules of comity. If you’d like to throw in your two cents, please make sure you do the same.

(By the way, Kathy, you’re invited to the party as well. You may be asked to dance the Macarena in the hot tub. I’ll back you up.)

If you want to know how the debate started, read an earlier blog entry of mine, then see David’s blog entry in response, followed by the debate, which takes place in the comments. It’s good brain food.

Kathy writes:

Joey, I’m surprised, if you read The Door your take on Christianity should have evolved past the Bart Simpson stage.

Hey man, you should be pleased with my progress. It used to be at the Beavis and Butt-Head stage. (“Huh-huh-huh-huh-huh, you said ‘And he knew her’…”)

Besides, a Simpsonian understanding of the Gospels isn’t all bad…
