Audio Advent Calendar #20: Two "Six Million Dollar Man" Christmas Adventures

Audio Advent Calendar, December 20.

Yesterday, we had a 1980’s television high-tech hero save Christmas; today, let’s go back a decade farther and enjoy the Christmas-saving adventures of the 1970’s favourite high-tech hero: Colonel Steve Austin, better known as The Six Million Dollar Man!

In today’s offering, I’ve got two of four recordings of Steve Austin’s Christmas adventures. The first is The Toymaker, in which Steve thwarts the Russkies from getting their paws on a top-secret device. The second is the Kris Kringle Caper, Steve becomes a department store Santa Claus to thwart an espionage ring. What adventures!

The voice work is typical for a radio play; the guy playing th epart of Steve Austin sounds more like Jon Stewart doing his impression of George W. Bush. As for the “bionic” sound effects that were one of the show’s trademarks, they apparently couldn’t get their paws on the ones used on the TV series, so they came up with their own.

Here are the sound files:

I’ll post the other two files tomorrow! Enjoy!

Alpine Qaeda!

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Drummond Sweater company isn’t around any more, what with ads like this (click the ad below to see it at full size):

Old ad for sweaters with headline 'Men are better than women!
Click the ad to see it at full size. Thanks to Miss Fipi Lele and deepdisco for the picture.

The copy reads like something that the Mullah who called unveiled women “uncovered meat” would have written, had he gone into advertising:

Men are better than women! Indoors, women are useful — even pleasant. On a mountain, they are something of a drag. So don’t go hauling them up a cliff just to show off your Drummond climbing sweaters. No need to. These pullovers look great anywhere. On the level!

“Indoors, women are useful,” the ad copy may read, but looking at the two guys in the ad, I don’t think they have any use for women, nudge nudge wink wink.

But It Goes So Well with the Traditional Firewater-and-Coke and the Sacred Honey-Roasted Peanuts

[via Colby Cosh] I think Colby put it very well when he wrote:

Do Health Canada and Cancer Care Ontario hate tobacco? Of course they do. But when questions of cultural relativism enter the picture, it turns out there’s tobacco, and then there’s tobacco.

Here’s the site to which he was referring:

Screenshot of the 'Are You Tobacco Wise?' website.
Christian fundies aren’t the only ones on the stupid side of the religious-vs-science tussle. Click the picture to visit the site.

Like other long-standing religious traditions such as witch-burning and human sacrifice, there’s no health upside to tobacco. Last time I checked, anything that can get you sick just by being in fields of it is a poison. This appears to be one of those cases where the facts come up against the good intentions of “we’re white, we’re straight and we’re sorry” and lose.

Today is "Reveal Your Blog Crush" Day

'Reveal Your Blog Crush' Day.

Postmodern Sass sent her friends — of whom I am part — an email announcing that today, December 15th is “Reveal Your Blog Crush” Day. The transformation of the internet into a giant world-wide high school is now complete.

“Reveal Your Blog Crush” Day is the creation of Sandra Hekkinen and “Ms. Sizzle”, and they say that you may have a “blog crush” on a blogger if…

  • You can’t wait to read what they post next.
  • You want to be friends with them.
  • You think they are the cat’s meow. Meow!
  • You might find them attractive- physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, whatever floats your boat.
  • If you met them in person, blushing might occur.

“If you have to really think hard about who your blog crush is,” Ms. Sizzle writes, “you probably don’t have one.”

Once you’ve determined whether you have a blog crush, it’s time for the awkward step: declaring it. The rules, as stated in Ms. Sizzle’s blog, are pretty simple:

  1. You can have more than one crush (but please refrain from naming your entire blogroll in an effort to keep everyone happy).
  2. You must reveal it on December 15, 2006 on your own blog.>
  3. Boys can crush on boys. Girls can crush on girls. Boys can crush on girls. Girls can crush on boys. This has little to do with our sexuality and more to do with being bloggeriffic.

By the way, when did “crush” (in the sense of infatuation) become a verb? In the past few years, people have gone from “having a crush on” someone to “crushing on” someone.

I’ll sit this one out, but if you have a blog crush and want to announce it to the world but don’t have a blog yourself, feel free to use the comments for this entry.
