Santa is for Everyone!

Many of the best Christmas carols have been penned by Jews, so why can’t they get in on some sweet Santa action? It’s only fair:

This seems an appropriate moment to bring up Sarah Silverman’s slight-not-safe-for-work tune for Santa: Give the Jew Girl Toys:

…and as I’ve pointed out before, there’s evidence that suggests that Santa is from India:

Tampa Photo Diary, Part One

I’m in Tampa this week, and I thought I’d share some random photos I snapped over the past couple of days…

YOLO Shot Glasses

You can find these at the souvenir shop at Tampa’s airport:

Set of coloured shot glasses labelled "YOLO: You Only Live Once"

YOLO probably started as a less bookish way of saying “Carpe diem“, but it’s devolved into a battle cry you yell out before doing something dangerous or embarrassing while drunk or stoned. But taking a dumb catchphrase putting it on a shot glass and still selling it after Ervin McKinness’ infamous tweet made minutes before he died in a drunk-driving accident:

That’s marketing genius!

I’ll Meet You at the Usual Place

Tampa airport's arrivals pick-up point for Air Canada, Cayman, Edelweiss and Sun Country airlines

I’ve seen this particular view for the past year: it’s where the Lady Friend picks me up when I visit.

Everything’s a Touchscreen Now

Coke vending machine with large video touchscreen

I like taking pictures of up-and-coming technological goodies, especially if there’s some connection between them and the work I do. This pop vending machine, which I saw at Tampa’s International Center, is controlled completely via its large touchscreen, which also plays promotional games and videos. It’s not all that removed from mobile device software, which happens to be my line of work.

How the 1% Get Around

Yellow Lotus with licence plate "KILL BILL"

Moments after taking this photo in a parking lot in Brandon (referred to in Wikipedia as “Tampa’s premier bedroom community”), a young fella who didn’t look as if he’d seen his twentieth summer hopped into this Lotus and peeled out.

Cider

They’re getting creative with their cider-labelling south of the border (which, to us Canadians, means the U.S.).

Remembering the War of Northern Aggression

Giant confederate flag as seen from the highway

When the people who applied for the variance to build this monument, they provided the vague description a lighted park with monuments and a “flagpole to commemorate American veterans”.

“They never asked the question, ‘Well, what flag you going to put up?’ ” said Marion Lambert, a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans (whose aim is to ensure “a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved”) and who applied for the variance, said. “I never lied to them.”

You Know You’re in Florida When…

"Senior Zone" sign

That’s why it’s called “God’s Waiting Room”.

Chuck E. Cheese is Ben Hur!

Portrait of Chuck E. Cheese dressed up as a Roman gladiator riding a chariot drawn by two horses. The road on which he rides is made of Chuck E. Cheese game tokens.

Chuck E. Cheese’s is full of surreal sights — An audio-animatronic band made up of four animals and a human pizza chef! A giant Habitrail for kids! The greasy wheels they try to pass off as pizza! — but the most surreal of all is this portrait of Chuck E. Cheese as a Roman chariot driver racing over piles of game tokens.

Giant Promotional Balloon Figures

I haven’t seen a wacky waving inflatable arm tube man in the past few visits, but I have seen these in the past couple of days…

Giant inflatable balloon shaped like an ape with the sign "Blowout sale". The balloon is on an auto dealer's lot.

Giant balloon shaped like a hamster wearing a sweater that says "Hamstar". The balloon is on a vehicle dealer's lot.

Giant balloon shaped like a "Big Green Egg" smoker, located outside a Weber barbecue dealership.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with outdoor cooking, the Big Green Egg is the greatest outdoor cooking invention ever. I have seen it in action and tasted food prepared on it at Richard Campbell’s house, and it’s stunningly good. Someday, it will be mine.

The "Big Green Egg" outdoor cooker in action

I took these photos in 2009 while having dinner at Richard Campbell’s place in Vancouver.

But is it Art?

Burger 21 is a craft burger chain in the Tampa Bay area, and it’s one of the better burger places I’ve been to. I love the photos on their walls.

Ford, TechCrunch, Yours Truly and What I Want From a Car in 2050

Still of the Ford TechCrunch video featuring Joey deVillaA few weeks back, I attended the TechCrunch Toronto Meetup that took place at the Steam Whistle Brewery. While there, I (and many other attendees) were asked to do quick interviews by Ford’s social media team to talk about what we’d like to see in cars in the year 2050.

The Ford team seemed quite amused with my answer, and I’m sure it played a part in my getting to drive around in a Ford C-MAX hybrid and go on a charity toy shopping spree on Tuesday.

Knowing that I would be in my 80s in 2050, I knew what I’d want in a car (asides from having it do the driving for me). I get the last word in Ford’s video, shown below, and if you’ll find it at the 2:00 mark. Enjoy!

The Dog Whisperer and the Elf

Joey deVilla with his accordion, posing with Rannie Turingan dressed as an elf. In the background, Sean Carruthers looks on.

Cesar Millan, the Dog WhispererHere’s a photo of me and Rannie Turingan doing the Ford C-MAX video shoot yesterday as videographer Sean Carruthers (who worked with me on Developer Jr.) looks on. I have two observations:

  • I think Rannie should dress up as an elf all the time.
  • I am slowly turning into The Dog Whisperer.

More photos from this outing later!

Patrick Stewart Drunk Sounds Like Michael Caine Sober

Daniel and Patrick Stewart, posing with cues beside a billiards table

I stumbled across a video last night featuring an interview of Sir Patrick “Captain Jean-Luc Picard / Professor Charles Xavier” Stewart, in which he provides an after-the-fact review of a game of pool that he won against his son, Daniel. Daniel has a couple of amusing shots of his dad on his Twitter account:

Patrick Stewart playing snooker

He’s had a few drinks and he’s affecting the accent of a working class guy, complete with expressions like “ennit?” (for “isn’t it?”). Among other things, he talks about going to Florida, my new home-away-from-home in the new year, where Jeb Bush has challenged him to a “pool-off”.

The video’s quite amusing — be sure to watch it:

What I’m Doing Today

I wish I was going to be doing this…

Photo: Santa on a motorbike, popping a wheelie

But I’m quite certain that I’d turn myself into road pizza rather quickly. What I’m doing today will be more like this…

Illustration: Santa driving a Ford sled

Seeing as there’s no snow on the ground as it’s going to be unseasonably warm, this might be a better way of getting around:

Photo: Ford C-MAX Energi

The vehicle pictured above is a Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid car, and Ford have invited me to take it for a spin around town today while they shoot pictures and video of me behind the wheel, driving about, telling stories and cracking wise.

Along with me for the ride to document the event will be Rannie “Photojunkie” Turingan:

And we’ll be zipping about The Danforth, where we’ll try out the C-MAX Energi’s features, participate in some holiday merriment and even do something for a good cause…
