You’ve probably seen this type of door lock, common in older houses:
They usually sport a switch that sets the lock into “automatic” mode; close the door and it automatically locks. These locks can cause problems, such as accidentally locking yourself outside. Apparently, if the switch breaks while set in “automatic”, not even the key will unlock it, as Dan, who works with me at TSOT, discovered two nights ago. Worse still, his landlord was out of the country and the locksmith was asking $400 to drill through the lock.
I live pretty close to Dan, so when he asked me to give him a hand getting into his place, I was happy to oblige. Luckily the house’s garage had a ladder, and after trying a couple of second-storey windows, we hit the jackpot:

$400 eh? Almost cheaper to go to a hotel for 4 nights.

But after breaking in through the window, how did he get out of the house if you say the switch was broken and the door couldn’t even be opened?
One of the favourite things in my job is getting to break into people’s houses. Getting stuck halfway through a window though is a danger that I seek to avoid by not eating as much as I’d like.

Thanks for your concern over my well-being. Once inside I was able to repair the aforementioned lock and gain my freedom.
I think it’s time for me to move into a ultramodern condo or something with a retinal scanner. What are the chances of losing an eye?
Dan – I think the chances of losing an eye are higher for people who wonder about the chances of losing an eye. 🙂
The $400 charge is silly.
Most cheap locks are easily defeated by using 2 metal drill bits; one just large enough that it won’t fit into the key slot, and the other just small enough to use tthe first as a pilot hole.
If you’re upgrading, might I suggest the Schlage locks which also have a pushbutton combination.
