It Happened to Me

Jet

Funny airplane moment: just after boarding the flight to Boston, a girl

in the row behind me asked her father: “Where’d they get this tiny

little plane, Dad? eBay?”

Since I fly to Boston to see Wendy about once every six weeks (she does

the same, and overlapping our flights lets us see each other every

three weeks), I try and find the least expensive flight possible, which

is usually American Eagle, the wing of American Airlines that provides regional services. This past weekend’s flight, before taxes, was CDN$179 (CDN$279 after taxes).

American Eagle uses ERJ jets, manufactured by Brazil’s Embraer. I’m always kind of disappointed that Embraer Jets don’t automatically play Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66’s Mais Que Nada [Windows Media sample / RealPlayer sample] when you board, but that’s like wishing that Seattle-based Boeing’s jets played Seattle-based Sir Mixx-a-Lott’s Baby Got Back [Windows Media sample / RealPlayer sample] or Airbuses played Plastic Bertrand’s Ca Plane Pour Moi [Windows Media sample / RealPlayer sample].

(Get it? “Ca plane”? On a plane? Oh, never mind.)

This is actually a US Airways regional jet, but I

believe it’s an Embraer Regional Jet. I took this photo while flying to

DC in 2000.

You ride on the wing of American Airlines? Doesn’t it get cold at 17,000 feet? Must be a good ticket price, though…

eBay! LOL! Not really. Funny, though – just not LOL funny. I like your musical suggestions.

Dirt cheap. Plus, I like tapping on the window, freaking William Shatner out and then hiding when he calls the stewardess.

I have to point out that Jorge Ben’s “Ponta de Lana Africano (Umbabarauma)” (from Africa Brasil) is one of the monster guitar riffs of all time, and might be the ideal soundtrack for some kinds of flights.

You mean your flights and hers are staggered, right? If the flights overlapped, then you’d happily spend your visiting time in each other’s cities, the same distance apart as before ..

I happen to work for American Eagle in Boston. If you flew on flight 4545, I was working on it (and not responsible for the delay either, though I never found out what caused it) Maybe next time you fly us, I’ll see about sneaking some Brazilian music into the CD player (does Sepultura count?)

Flight 4545, baby! I was on that! I’ve got AAdvantage points coming out the wAAzoo!

Were you part of the flight crew or on the ground? Did you see my accordion case in the luggage? I’ll have to say “hi” next time I fly down!

Yeah, I handled your accordion. Next time you’re there, look for the jackass wearing shorts in a snowstorm. That’s me.
