More Rapture Material

Here’s more supplementary reading for those of you who enjoyed the photo I posted earlier.

The best (and most amusing) introduction to the Rapture comes from the comic book tracts of John T. “Jack” Chick. A sample of his Rapture tract, Here He Comes! appears below; click the image to read the whole thing.

Excerpt from John T. Chick's rapture tract, 'Here He Comes!'

If your house or apartment has an intercom at the front door, you can use the Rapture to deal with pesky Jehovah’s Witnesses like I did.

Before the Da Vinci Code, there was the Left Behind series of books, the story of a scrappy band of people who didn’t amke the cut for the Rapture but are now preparing for the Second Coming. I bought the first book second-hand at Avenue Victor Hugo Books’ “Going out of business because we don’t know how to run one” sale and will read the rest of the series someday when I’m in the mood for some junk lit and the ultimate deus ex machina. For a review of what the books are like, check out this Salon article, Fundamentally Unsound.

And finally, because I hate to see you leave this blog empty-handed, I give you a handy PDF file titled 14 Things to Do if You Have Missed the Rapture [108KB PDF file]. Me, I plan to rent a lot of videos and never return them.

(In case you’re not up on the eschatology of the more whacked-out branches of Protestants, here’s the Wikipedia entry on The Rapture.)

Transcript for May 2nd "Ask Tucows" Chat

We wrapped up the second “Ask Tucows” chat session a couple of hours ago, and it went quite well. It was one of four online chat sessions scheduled this year in which people can chat directly with various people from Tucows to ask questions, make comments and suggestions and get to know us a little better. The chat ran from 12:00 noon until about 3:30 with lots of interesting questions, comments and ideas exchanged. I’d like to thank everyone who participated, especially Tim Aiello and Brent Ashley for their BlogChat chat service.

There are two more chats scheduled for this year:

  • Tuesday, August 1
  • Tuesday, November 7

Scenes from Last Night’s "Spaghettioke"

Every couple of weeks, Carson T. Foster, host and creator of Kick Ass Karaoke, hosts a karaoke night at The Social, one of the spots that’s making West Queen West an increasingly popular destination. Not only do you get karaoke; you also get spaghetti (meat or veggie) at $2 a bowl and there’s always a chance that Rachel McAdams, who hangs out in the area, will drop by. Wendy and I dropped in early, which gave us a chance to hang out and chat with Carson, which is always interesting and always a pleasure.

I like the crowd at the Social, and Carson’s karaoke night there has an interesting feel to it that I think has been missing from the Sunday karaoke nights — it feels like his nights at the original venue, the Bovine Sex Club, circa 1999 when they were still new. Maybe it’s the crowd (a rather indie rock hipsterish bunch), perhaps it’s the Social’s nice open space; it might even be just having a new crowd to surprise with the accordion. I can’t put my finger on it, but I really like the vibe.

The other thing I like is the projector, which allows the lyrics to appear in large type behind the performer. With my flash turned off and the exposure turned up high, I was able to get some pretty nice arty shots:

Inform 7 (Or: "Previous IF paradigms have been eaten by a grue.")

Well, this is interesting: Inform, a programming language used to create interactive fiction, has completely changed in version 7. It now uses a “natural language” approach rather than a “programming language” one, which means that it should be considerably more accessible to writers without prior experience with programming languages. If you’ve always wanted to write interactive fiction but found programming languages like previous versions of Inform or TADS too daunting, you might find that Inform 7 does the trick for you.

I’ve written a quick blurb about it over at Tucows Farm and you should check out the new and improved Inform site for the full story.
