A Public Service Announcement to First-Year University Students Moving Into Residence

(To my American student readers: substitute “dorm” for “residence”.)

The first thing you should do when entering your room — after introducing yourself to your roomate, if you have one — is to flip the mattress over.

Trust me on this one.

  • Leonard Hall, room 313, bed on the east side for the 1987-88 school year. Left an autograph on the drawer of the desk: "Cunning Stunt [my original Golden Words nom de plume] was here."

Leonard Hall was all men back then (is it still?). Vic Hall was all women and "I spent the night in Vic" was a popular way to swagger. McNeill was all-guys and considered to be the rowdy place. Morris Hall was the only Main Campus co-ed residence. Chown had the nickname "The Nunnery", and we sometimes went to the Ban Righ cafeteria to check out girls.

Oh, if I'd only had the accordion back then.

  • Things have changed - Leonard went co-ed last year, Victoria Hall and McNeill have been co-ed for a while. You can still check out frosh girls at either Leonard or Ban Righ cafeterias.

  • I was in Kingston this weekend, and apparently this year there are 10 16-year old frosh. WTF. seriously.
