KEXP

In case you hadn’t heard, one of the best radio stations out there is Seattle’s KEXP,
which broadcasts both on regular analog radio and online. They are an
independent, commercial-free radio station with amazing DJs, playlists
to die for, and have shows and guests that nobody else could have
possibly landed (one recent treat was french synthpop duo Air peforming
live in their studios).

Give them a listen, and if you like what you hear, send them some
money. Remember, it’s listener-supported radio, so it’s our bucks (as
opposed to Clear Channel’s) that keeps them going. In the open sewage line that is commercial radio, these guys are like a fresh pint of Guinness.

  • Hi Joey,
I've been lurking for the last year and enjoy the blog a lot. May I put in a plug for a Canadian station that does the same thing? CKUA in Edmonton (ckua.com) is a publicly supported station that plays roots, 60's R&B, big band, electronica, classical, etc, supports all the local festivals, interviews artists coming through - and the programmers choose their own music! Please do check it out if you haven't heard it.

  • 90.3, baby!
I don't think I've heard anybody outside of Seattle talk about the station. Risen from the ashes of KCMU. Listen to John in the morning from 6-10am.

  • I listened for a couple hours, and it's been pretty good sof ar. They mentioned that my favourite radio station, WOXY Cincinatti is no more. So KEXP sounds like an excellent replacement, although pledge drives are just as annoying as commercials, even though I understand the need for both.

  • Although after listening to a station for some 3 years, you'd think a person would learn how to to correctly spell the city from which it originates, Cincinnati.

  • The drive is only for this week, so it'll be back to normal soon. They have a week-long drive three times a year.

  • Loveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveitloveit.
KEXP is wonderful. Personal favoourites: Wo' Pop and something Ambience. And now I get to trying out CKUA. Yum!
