My favourite humourist on the rightward side of the political spectrum is P.J. O’Rourke, whose stuff I’ve been enjoying since high school. Along with Ben Stein (if we ignore his idiocy with his film Expelled for the time being), there’s enough sense and broad appeal in his writing for him to be able to contribute [...]

The TTC Strike and Resolution, Summed Up Very Nicely
Here’s a video that does a pretty good job (and funny!) of summarizing what happened with Accordion City’s transit system and their strike. As an added bonus, it provides a breezy baedeker for Canadian and Toronto politics:
I give this video bonus points for its consistent message of “Nobody listens to the NDP” (and with good [...]
I Feel Your Pain, Bill…
I get the same expression on my face whenever I see Hillary:

My Very First Impression After Reading “Baby Invasion”
My first impression after reading the Toronto Life article Baby Invasion (which I mentioned in this article) was: The people in this article seem to think that Stuff White People Like is some kind of instruction manual.
More later.
Ben Stein’s “Expelled”: Not a Movie to be Tossed Aside Lightly, But Hurled with Great Force
Ben Stein has had an interesting career so far: law professor, economics writer, Nixon speechwriter, Nixon apologist, television show host and movie actor (you might recall his famous scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in which he talks about “voodoo economics” and the Laffer curve, boring his class to sleep), and it’s going to remain [...]
Objectivist Hero
Here’s the simplest, most succinct explanation of Objectivism that I could find. It could also be used to explain the inner workings of Wikipedia, a number of failed start-ups, open source projects and political campaigns.

Of the three, what would I choose? None. I’d go for this instead:
The Obligatory Conrad Black Joke
While I have not been following the details of the Conrad Black case, the fact that such questionable characters such as Mark Steyn and Elton John defend him doesn’t help his case as I am concerned.
College Professor Salaries vs. College Football Coach Salaries
BAD, or The Dumbing of America — A worthwhile read 15 years ago, and still relevant today.
In his book, BAD, or the Dumbing of America, Paul Fussell suggested that one of the best ways to make America a less dumb place would be to eliminate athletic scholarships entirely.
I agree — I think that the [...]
I Hate the Dufferin Bus
One thing I will not miss about working at Tucows is the Dufferin 29 bus in the morning — inconsistently scheduled, often overcrowded, and this morning (like many others), poorly planned. About a hundred of us were crammed onto the sidewalk waiting for a bus that wasn’t “short turned”. The Dufferin bus is the biggest [...]
Kudos to Sears!
In the previous post, I praised Nordstrom for showing some restraint with the Christmas marketing.
On the other end of the shopping spectrum is Sears, who are doing two even bigger and better things:
For any employees who’ve been called up to serve in the war, Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining [...]
Kudos to Nordstrom!
My internet friend Miss Fipi Lele sent me this very encouraging photo:

It reads:
At Nordstrom, we won’t be decking the halls until Friday, November 23rd. Why? Well, we just like the idea of celebrating one holiday at a time.
From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.
Nordstrom will be closed Thanksgiving Day. On [...]
Two Things That Came to Mind When Reading Alan Dershowitz’s Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal
I missed reading “Dersh’s” op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled Democrats and Waterboarding until this morning. After reading it, these two things came to mind:
“Reluctant to torture” is not the same as “soft on terror”.
“We should do it because the Nazis did it, and it worked!” is already a bad argument when put forth [...]
12 Vacation Days?!
Click the comic to see it on its original page.
I’ve posted the xkcd comic above in honour of the boss’ just telling me that I’ve managed to accrue an extra 12 vacation days and that I should plan on taking them sometime soon.
Hmmm…
Adios, Pendejo!
It’s nice to start the working week with some good news: the world’s most sleazy amnesiac, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned. Says the A-G, who’s stepping down on September 17th:
I have lived the American dream. Even my worst days as Attorney General have been better than my father’s best days.
