CPAP (or: Snorkeling While I Sleep)

At the Doctor’s Office
Regular readers of this blog will remember the article last year in which I wrote about my overnight stay at the sleep lab at St. Joseph’s Health Centre. I got the results a while back, but it was only a couple of weeks ago that I saw my doctor about the results. [...]

A Forgotten Story from Austin: Pokin’ a Dead Goat with a Stick

I’ve mentioned in earlier entries that my first week with b5media wasn’t spent at the office; rather, it was spent at the South by Southwest Interactive Conference in Austin, Texas. Since around a dozen of us were staying, it was decided that it would be cheaper to rent a ranch (which we found via Craigslist) [...]

Now Available at a Cheesy T-Shirt Kiosk at a Mall Near You

I saw this at Vaughan Mills last weekend. I may have to get one for the next nerd conference I attend…

Ooh! Free Chicken Legs! [Updated]

While biking eastbound on Dundas Street West to work this morning, I spotted a long line that stretched around the the corner of Dundas West and Rusholme. The reason? Free chicken legs!

The Portuguese butcher shop/grocery store O Nosso Talho (which Babelfish clumsily translates as “Ours I Cut”) was offering free chicken legs. I’d say that [...]

Back to the Bike Commute

The weather forecast for the next few days.
With the weather forecast predicting a whole week’s worth no snow and above-freezing temperatures — not to mention the threat of a transit strike — I figured it was time to dust off the Scorpion King (pictured below) and resume cycling to work.

The bike commute from my [...]

New Accordion!

A couple of days ago, Sean Galbraith was cleaning out his parents’ house and came across his mom’s old Hohner Verdi IV accordion. She told him that it had one oiwner prior to her and she believes it’s from the early 1960s. She hasn’t played it in about 15 years and suggested [...]

Scenes from the Office

My first week with b5media was my best first week on the job ever. On my very first day, I boarded a plane and flew to Austin to attend the South by Southwest Interactive conference, one of the biggest events in our industry. For a week, I attended interesting sessions, met new coworkers and colleagues, [...]

I Beat SxSARS!

A number of the Toronto tech gang who went down to South by Southwest — often referred to in its shortened form, SxSW — have come down with a flu-like bug. The combination of flying and being at an event attended by thousands of people packed into close quarters, either in conference sessions or bars, [...]

Austin Travel Diary, Part 21: I Walk the Line

If I ever release an album, this Johnny Cash-a-riffic photo that Morgan Johnston took of me in Austin will have to figure into the album art somehow:

Austin Travel Diary, Part 20: Continental Airlines’ Oddball Snack

On the Austin-Cleveland leg of my flight back home, Continental served me the snack shown below:

Beef salami slices
Peppercorn parmesan cheese spread
Crackers
Trail mix (some peanuts and raisins, mostly white chocolate chips)
M&Ms

An odd combo, but the snack was appreciated.

I Still Own the Phrase!

Now imagine doing “jazz hands” in latex gloves.
Today’s encounter with U.S. Customs (chronicled in this entry) reminded me of a couple of old posts of mine — The Star-Spangled Banner and Anal Sovereignty and A Bag of Squishy Cows is a Bag of Trouble. I did some quick Googling and discovered that the first entry [...]

Austin Travel Diary, Part 2: Cleveland

I’m chilling out during a four-hour stopover in Cleveland Hopkins Airport, drawing power from an outlet clearly meant for the custodial staff, handling some correspondence on $2/hour wifi. Some quick notes:

The flight was on an Embraer ERJ, which meant gate-checking the accordion. Some minor damage ensued — the keyboard now slopes from the left side [...]

Austin Travel Diary, Part 1: Pearson Airport

Check-in Woes
For my 7:00 a.m. flight to Austin (I’m flying there for South by Southwest Interactive), I arrived at the airport at 5:00 a.m., with my boarding passes already printed at home thanks to the modern miracle of web check-in. However, as soon as I arrived, I saw the word “retard” on the screen and [...]

The Final Countdown, Again

Didn’t I just do this?
Once again, it’s my last day at the job, which means I’m cranking that classic of 80’s hair metal: The Final Countdown by Sweden’s gift to rock, Europe.
It’s become a bit of an end-of-job tradition for me that started back at OpenCola, the dot-com that Cory Doctorow co-founded and for [...]

The New Job: Nerd Wrangler at b5media

I figured I’d start off the working week with a big announcement: I’ve landed a new gig. As of this Thursday, March 6th, I’m going to be working at b5media, a network of 320 blogs that gets a total of over 10 million unique visits every month.
Depending on whom you ask, my new job title [...]

Also on My Agenda Next Week

In addition to making an appearance at BarCamp Austin, I also plan to be at South by Southwest Interactive (a.k.a. “SxSWi”)…
