“Play-by-Play Account of a Strip Tease”

If you showed the ad below for Arrow menswear to an advertising exec today, s/he’d probably say: “Too wordy! You can’t see the real product! The illustrations are too small!” It’s a shame, because I rather like the style of these old ads:

Help Remedies’ Clever Packaging

The blog HealthBolt (one of the blogs in the b5media network) has an article about Help Remedies’ cool packaging for things like aspirin and band-aids. The aspirin package is labelled “Help / I have a headache” and the package for the band-aids says “Help / I’ve cut myself”:

Unintentional Onanism

The smart-alecky UK-based technology site The Register noticed something about the new logo for the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC), picture below:

If you rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, it looks like a stick figure engaging in the act of…er, pleasuring himself:

Come to think of it, considering how government initiatives related to business typically end [...]

I Feel Like Annoying Typeface Nerds Today…

…hence the graphic below:

You can also call it “Arial Serif” if you like, because Arial and Helvetica are the same thing.

More “Canadian Club” Ads

Here are two more “Damn Right Your Dad Drank It” Canadian Club ads in the same spirit as the ones I covered earlier (here and here). Both these posters were on the boarded-up windows of the as-yet-unpurchased former location of “The 360″ on Queen Street West:

The Drama Triangle

This would make an excellent T-shirt design. Or perhaps the crest for a high school! Or a LiveJournal!

Super Tuesday Post #1

Courtesy of Boing Boing and photographed by Sean Bonner in Los Angeles, here’s what’s quite possibly the most plain-and-simple political poster you’ll see:

Missile-Throwing Eyebeam Laser Robot on a Unicorn

I couldn’t resist checking out a picture with a name like that, could I?

“The Trouble with Tribbles”, if Edward Gorey Had Illustrated It

Webcomic artist Shaenon Garrity came across an old Boston Globe article about macabre comic artist Edward Gorey. The first paragraph read:

Edward Gorey watched television for the first time this summer, or so he claims, and in the process the 52-year-old artist became a “Star Trek” fan. He watched the science-fiction program reruns twice [...]

A Tale of Two Facades

Take a look at this building:

…and then this building:

Believe it or not, these buildings aren’t just in the same neighbourhood, they’re right beside each other. I took both photos on the same day, perhaps 15 seconds apart. Good landscaping and decent signage make a big difference.
(I really hate the [...]

T-Shirt Design of the Moment

Right now, my favourite T-shirt design over at Busted Tees is “Canada: America’s Hat”…

Mondo Pasta’s Clever Ads

“To get Mondo Pasta on everyone’s mind,” says the copy that explains this clever bit of sticker work, “we created a bigger than life promotion at the most frequented place in Hamburg: the harbor. Hug stickers of faces turned ships into permanent pasta slurpers.”

The “Opposite World” Map

Here’s my current desktop background image: a map of an alternate Earth, where land and water have been switched:

I rather dig the “Philippine Kingdom”, located on the far right of the map, not far from the equator.

Richard “Creative Class” Florida Moving to Accordion City

Richard Florida is moving to Accordion City!
The urban thinker who coined the term “creative class” is following in Jane Jacobs’ footsteps and setting up residence here, where he’ll be doing work at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, where he’ll continue his studies on his pet topic: how creativity [...]
