Interesting post.
The Microsoft mantras really went downhill after the first one. I'd be curious to see what Apple's mantras were over the years.

The 2008 version just seems so vague and empty.

Nice piece

About that Bill Buxton exercise, you can also look at the movies to see how art directors envisioned computers in the future. In ALIEN, for example, they used keyboards (no mouse) and CRT monitors. Earlier, in COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT the computer takes up a whole mountain.

But in one of the countless Star Trek specials that aired recently, hosted by William Shatner, there was a neat segment about developers who got their inspiration from watching the show.

One -- whose name I didn't catch -- was apparently an early developer of the iPod. He said he got his inspiration from watching an episode of TNG in which Data called up any music he wanted for his listening pleasure. How neat, he thought. Why can't we do that too? And, thus, an idea was born.

They're also working on creating a Holodeck, but not much success so far.
