A longtime staple of hip-hop and plumber culture is now illegal in Flint, Michigan: you can now be warned or charged for wearing saggy pants.

Flint’s new interim Chief of Police, David Dicks, announced that Flint police will start arresting people wearing saggy pants that expose underwear or bare bottoms. “Some people call it a fad,” he is quoted in the Detroit Free Press, “but I believe it’s a national nuisance. It is indecent and thus it is indecent exposure, which has been on the books for years.” In a deprtmental memo released in June, he said “This immoral self expression goes beyond freedom of expression.”
The penalty for this crime: 93 days to a year in jail and/or fines up to $500.
My favourite line in the article is from 18-year old Senita Abrams of Flint, who said “I think it’s cute when boys sag.” She may or may not have been talking about pants.

They should make it illegal to wear winter boots in the middle of summer, or crocs with business attire. In my opinion, those fashion crimes are far worse than sagging pants.
Chief Dicks’ crackdown on bare bottoms? This is like straight out of The Onion.
What the kids who dress like this don’t realise is the origin on the fashion. In prison, when an inmate wanted to advertise that he wished to have anal sex, they wore their pants that way to advertise the goods…
some laws were just made to be broken. Chief Dick’s is an ass clown.
While I don’t know that it should be ‘law’, I think it’s a great idea that they have those kids pull up their pants. Do people still do that any more though? I thought that was so 45 seconds ago.
Dick’s, better change your name, sounds lewd and lascivious. A*s clown is close, a*shole is more like it. Another waste of taxpayer money. Cut the department, they obviously have crime under control!
I think it’s about time! But what about the girls who wear hip huggers and expose their thongs, that is far more indecent in my opinion.
I can go to a third world country and the men know how to put their pants on correctly. Only in America is it a problem. And we somehow think we’re smarter than the rest of the world. I don’t know if it should be illegal, but it makes a bold statement about how pathetic our young American men are.
