When I was in second grade, I wanted to be a race car driver (Formula One/Indy Car -- A.J. Foyt was my hero). When I was in eighth grade, I wanted to be a secretary (I *loved* office machines), probably because I didn't know there were other options available. It's probably telling that between ages 8 and 14, I'd turned a bunch of cardboard boxes into pretend computers/punch card readers, and I'd taught myself how to program in BASIC.

I'm a software engineer now, working in what I consider to be my dream job. I don't think I would have said it was my dream job before I joined the team 10 years ago, but it quickly became obvious that it's what I should have been dreaming about all along.

For years the people who worked with me asked me why I wasn't working in IT. Now I'm working in IT and it's probably the most boring job I've ever had, I feel like a robot. I haven't found my ITdom yet, I'm looking at how to work it in. So, no dream job here.

I showed the article to a friend of mine who laughed at me. “That’s stupid. That’s why I’m going to be a rock drummer. It’ll be way better — you’ll be coming home, all tired from work, ready to die, and I’ll be onstage and on TV in front of screaming chicks, getting high off the audience’s smoke.”

Not to mention that even B-team coders make a lot more money than drummers who fail to ascend the heights of stardom. And I'm sure your code-fu is better than the B-squad.
