Yup, seen the bus photos, and yes, it's the fault of the Powers That Be in New Orleans that they weren't used.

However, the author of JunkYardBlog has his own strain of what the right-wing blogosphere likes to refer to as BDS -- "Bush Derangement Syndrome". The state and federal governments, like the municipal government, also have much to answer for.

I'm not looking forward the next few weeks, at least as far as news from New Orleans is concerned. It's gonna be ugly and worse, it's gonna be stupid.

Suggested additions to the "additional scenario twists": the 1-hour and 5-minute versions. Arguably the difference between the 24- and 12-hour versions is quantitative (how much stuff you bring, how far you try to go, etc.) but the 1-hour and 5-minute versions really impose qualitatively different restrictions, and while they're progressively more unlikely, they're worth thinking about.

I don't claim that I pass this pop quiz, incidentally, but I've been giving a lot of thought to related issues recently...and your post is a useful organizer in that regard. Thanks!

We moved to Florida in May. I have a car GPS with three routes North I've pre-programmed. I have a gas can in the garage with enough to give me 200 miles (at 40 mpg). It should at least top off my tank. I have an emergency trip box stored in the trunk.

There are three households spread across Central Florida in my extended family. We have keys to each others' houses and can go to any home outside the evacuation area. Each house has a hurricane supply store. If we all have to evacuate we each have car seats for the single child. Each adult has permission to pick up the child at school.

We each have XM in the car with weather and traffic information.

The weakest spot are the cell phones. I'm trying to find other ways we can communicate with each other until we meet up.

I have friends and family in Indiana. The other two households have family in Tennessee and Kentucky. If we have to we have family in Canada. Assuming we can make it that far.

thanks, Joey, for making me feel utterly, devastatingly, unprepared. jeebus, i don't even own a flashlight. (seriously, this is a good post and yes, One Of Many Those Things I Must Do. thank you.)

I do feel the need to comment on one thing tho, and I'm sure you didn't mean it the way it sounds, but when it comes to lack-of-preparedness... a good portion of the citizenry of NOLA were broke broke BROKE as it was, living paycheck to paycheck and week to week. It was the end of the month. Folks were waiting for payday. Preparedness (aka a bus ticket outta there) was not a financial option for many. (which begs the question, why weren't other resources provided for these folks, hunh W?!?!?!?)

but i also wanted to bring your attention to something cool folks can do to help -- perhaps you can do a little PR? an auction on flickr to benefit Katrina

The only way to hang onto a cat during a storm of that intensity or in its aftermath is in a cat carrier. If one isn't handy, it's possible to improvise one.

You forgot an important twist, related to the little kids twist: pets.

Dragging kids along is one problem, dragging a dog along is yet another, and I can't even begin to imagine how and if it would ever be possible to hold on to your cat during a Katrina-like storm.

If I had been in New Orleans, I would probably have been okay on the evacuation, but I would have likely lost my cat and computer data (I never make backups...I know, I know.)
